How many apps were released in 2026? The numbers behind the new app boom

Roughly 2,000+ new apps hit Google Play every day this year, and global releases are up 60% year over year. Here is what the data says — and what it means if you are one of them.

Key takeaways

  • Independent trackers estimate about 2,100–2,450 new Google Play apps per day in 2026.
  • Appfigures data shows worldwide app releases up 60% year over year in Q1 2026, and 104% in April.
  • Nobody — not even Google — publishes an official total. Credible estimates range from 1.6M to 3.5M live apps.
  • More launches, flat demand: every new app is competing for roughly the same number of searches.

For most of the early 2020s, the number of new apps launching each month was flat or falling. App stores were "mature". Then 2026 happened. AI coding tools made shipping an app something a determined non-developer can do over a weekend, and release counts went vertical.

Google Play: roughly half a million new apps by August

A September 2026 study by Testers Community observed 3,037,501 distinct Google Play listings between 27 July and 25 August 2026. Of the listings with a readable release date, 499,548 were first released in 2026 — about 2,100 new apps every day.

Other trackers land in the same range. 42matters estimates an average of around 2,442 new apps published per day in 2026 (roughly 88,000 a month). The exact figure depends on methodology: what counts as an "app", whether you count listings that were published and pulled within weeks, and how you treat games.

Both stores are booming — and Apple is feeling it most

According to Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch, worldwide app releases in Q1 2026 were up 60% year over year across the App Store and Google Play combined, and up 80% on iOS alone. In April the combined figure hit +104%. Apple's App Store is on track to beat its 2016 record for submissions, and developers reported review times stretching from the usual one or two days to a week or more in March.

The category mix shifted too. Games still lead, but utilities moved to #2, lifestyle to #3, and productivity entered the top five — exactly the kind of small, single-purpose apps that are fastest to build with AI tools.

At the same time, Google Play got smaller

The launch boom sits on top of an aggressive clean-up. Reporting based on Appfigures data found Google Play removed around 1.8 million apps from the start of 2024, taking the store from about 3.4 million apps down to roughly 1.8 million. Stricter testing requirements for new personal developer accounts, spam enforcement and minimum quality bars all played a part. More apps are launching, and more are being removed — the store is churning faster than ever.

More apps, not more users

Here is the uncomfortable part. Downloads are not growing anywhere near as fast as releases. Analyses of App Store data put download growth at low single digits in 2025 and the first half of 2026. The number of people searching for "habit tracker" or "expense splitter" did not double because the number of habit trackers doubled.

That means the average new app faces more competition for the same pool of searches. Page one of a Play Store search still has only a handful of slots that get most of the taps. If you launched in 2026, the question is not "is there demand?" but "can people find me in a result list that is now twice as crowded?"

What this means for you

  • Assume a competitor ships every week. Your ranking for a keyword can change without you touching anything — that is keyword drift, and it is more frequent in crowded categories.
  • Pick keywords you can actually win. Broad head terms are flooded; specific long-tail phrases are where new apps still break into the top 10.
  • Measure positions, not vibes. Play Console tells you which searches brought installs, not where you ranked. Track your top 10–20 keywords daily so you notice movement within a day.
  • Your listing is your moat. When building is cheap, distribution is the hard part — and on Play, distribution starts with search.

The 2026 app boom is real. It is also, mostly, a boom in supply. The developers who win this year are the ones who treat discoverability as a first-class feature.
