ASO in the age of AI: how Play Store optimisation works in 2026

Guided Search, Ask Play and Gemini recommendations change who reads your listing. What still works, what changed, and a 2026 ASO checklist for indie developers.

Key takeaways

  • Keywords still matter: Play search ranking is still driven by text relevance plus quality and engagement signals.
  • AI surfaces summarise your listing — vague or stuffed copy now hurts twice.
  • Intent and long-tail phrases beat single head terms.
  • Use AI to draft, humans to decide, and rank tracking to verify.

App Store Optimisation used to be a fairly mechanical discipline: pick keywords, put them in the right fields, improve your conversion rate, repeat. In 2026 there are new readers of your listing — Google's AI models — and new ways users arrive at it. The fundamentals still hold, but the emphasis has shifted.

What changed in 2025–2026

  • Guided Search: users can type a goal ("plan a trip to Goa") and Play groups results by intent, rather than purely matching keywords.
  • Ask Play: users ask questions about an app on its listing and get AI-generated answers.
  • Gemini discovery: apps are recommended inside the Gemini app, outside the store.
  • Play Shorts: short-form video becomes a browsing surface on Play.
  • Gemini in Play Console: AI drafts custom store listings and translations for you.

What did not change

The large majority of Play installs from search still come from someone typing words into the search bar and tapping one of the first results. Google Play indexes your title, short description and long description for search relevance, and combines that with quality and engagement signals — ratings, installs, retention, crash rates. If you do not show up in the top results for the phrases your users type, the new AI surfaces will not save you.

The 2026 Play Store ASO checklist

  1. Title (30 chars): brand + the core job. Include your most important keyword phrase if it reads naturally.
  2. Short description (80 chars): one clear sentence saying who it is for and what it does. It is the most-read text on your listing.
  3. Long description (4,000 chars): open with the job and the audience; cover features as benefits; answer common questions (price, offline, languages, sign-up); use natural variations of your phrases. No keyword lists — Google penalises stuffing.
  4. Keep your website consistent with your listing — AI answers may draw on both.
  5. Localise the top markets. AI-assisted translation in Play Console makes this cheap; review the output.
  6. Screenshots and video: the first two screenshots decide most installs. Plan for Play Shorts if you are in the US.
  7. Ratings and quality: fix crashes, prompt for reviews at happy moments, reply to reviews.
  8. Track 10–20 keywords daily in your main countries and annotate every listing change.

Using AI for ASO without wrecking your listing

AI is excellent at generating options: ten title variants, five short descriptions, a restructured long description, keyword clusters you had not thought of. It is bad at knowing which option is true for your app and which one will rank. Treat AI output as a first draft, check every claim, keep within Play's policies (no "#1", "best" or unverifiable superlatives), and change one element at a time so you can measure the effect.

That is how ASODrift's AI listing ideas work: they are generated from your live listing, the keywords you track and where you currently rank, trimmed to Play's character limits, and presented as suggestions — never auto-applied.

Measure, or it did not happen

The single biggest ASO mistake in 2026 is the same as in 2020: changing the listing and then looking at installs a month later. Installs mix seasonality, ads, featuring and a dozen other factors. Keyword positions are a direct signal. Track them daily, mark the date of each change, and within one to two weeks you will see whether it helped.
