Key takeaways

  • Ask Play answers user questions on your listing — your description and website are its source material.
  • Gemini can now create keyword-tailored custom store listings and pre-fill translations in Play Console.
  • Play Shorts brings a short-video discovery feed to Play, starting in the US.
  • Developer verification is live in four countries from September 2026 and rolls out globally through 2027.
  • None of these show your keyword position. You still need rank tracking for that.

Google announced most of this year's Play changes at I/O 2026 in May, with more rolling out through the summer. Here is what shipped, what is still rolling out, and what it means for your listing. Rollout timing varies by country and account — check Play Console for what is enabled for you.

1. Ask Play: conversational answers on your listing

Ask Play is a Gemini-powered overlay on Play that answers questions like "does this work offline?" or "is there a free plan?" before a user installs, including follow-up questions. Google says it can handle the vast majority of user queries. There is also Ask Play Highlights, a summary shown on search result pages for complex searches.

2. App discovery inside Gemini

Apps and games can now surface inside the Gemini app on Android and the web, so users can chat their way to an app recommendation. This is a discovery surface outside the Play Store itself — another reason your listing needs to read clearly to a model.

3. Gemini-generated custom store listings for keywords

In Play Console's Grow overview, clicking a keyword recommendation can now have Gemini create a custom store listing tailored to that keyword, ready to deploy in one click. Custom store listings let you show different messaging to different audiences — now much cheaper to produce.

4. AI-assisted localisation

You can manage listing translations with structured CSV files or Google Sheets, and Gemini can pre-populate translated listings across languages for your review. Subscription benefit text can be AI-translated too. Localised listings are one of the highest-leverage ASO moves — they just got much cheaper.

5. Play Shorts: short-form video discovery

Play Shorts is a full-screen, portrait video feed inside Play, rolling out first in the US with select developers and expanding to more markets over the coming months. Video is becoming a discovery surface on Play, not just a preview on your listing.

6. New reporting and AI insights

  • A new Reach metric for how visible your app is on Play.
  • Traffic source breakdowns that follow users through engagement, retention and monetisation.
  • Cart conversion rates and subscriber tenure / churn reasons.
  • Gemini chart descriptions on more pages, plus interactive Q&A — ask why a metric moved and get suggestions.

These are useful, but notice what is still missing: your position for a given keyword in a given country. Play Console tells you which search terms brought visitors and installs, and now how visible you are overall. It still does not tell you that you slid from #6 to #19 for your best keyword last Tuesday.

7. Subscriptions: fewer lost subscribers

  • Delayed charging: when a payment fails and Google's risk models rate it low-risk, the user keeps access while the charge retries in the background.
  • Account recovery period extended from 30 to 60 days, which Google says reduces involuntary churn by up to 18%.
  • A Flexible Subscription Flows API for plan changes and downgrades at cancellation (coming).

8. Developer verification

Google is requiring identity verification for developers of apps installed on certified Android devices — including apps distributed outside Play. Verification opened to all developers in March 2026; enforcement starts in September 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, with a global rollout through 2027. A limited-distribution option (no ID, up to 20 devices) exists for students and hobbyists.

9. Integrity and spam

A new "Protected with Play" dashboard centralises integrity, distribution and monetisation defences, and the Play Integrity API has lower warm-up latency. Google also reports blocking 160 million spam ratings and reviews in the past year — review manipulation is increasingly unlikely to help and increasingly likely to hurt.

The takeaway

Play in 2026 is more AI-driven at both ends: Gemini helps you write and localise listings, and Gemini helps users read them. Your listing copy is now input to machines as well as people. Keep it specific and honest, test changes one at a time, and track your keyword positions daily so you can see which change actually moved you.
