Closed testing
A Google Play test track for a limited group of testers — required for new personal developer accounts before production.
What is Closed testing?
Closed testing distributes a build to a list of testers you control. For personal developer accounts created after 13 November 2023, Google requires a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in continuously for at least 14 days before you can apply for production access. (It was 20 testers until December 2024.)
Why it matters for ASO
Without meeting the requirement, a new app from a newer personal account can’t go live. Testers also give early feedback before public reviews start.
How to improve it
- Recruit testers who will genuinely use the app.
- Keep at least 12 opted in for 14 continuous days.
- Collect feedback and fix issues before launch.
- Apply for production access from the Play Console dashboard.
