Google Play store listing conversion: how to read Play Console and improve it
Ranking gets you seen. Your listing decides whether people install. What Play Console now measures on your store listing, how to use peer benchmarks, and the changes that move conversion most.
Key takeaways
- Play Console reports store listing visitors and acquisitions by traffic source: Google Play search, Google Play explore, and ads and referrals.
- Google’s help page now describes the store listing metric as a click-through rate: the share of visitors who tapped Install, Open or Pre-register.
- Peer benchmarks show your daily performance against your peers’ median, 25th and 75th percentiles, where there’s enough data.
- Rankings and conversion multiply: a better listing gets more installs from every keyword you already rank for.
There are two halves to growing on Google Play. The first is being found: ranking for the searches your users make. The second is being chosen: turning the people who land on your listing into installs. Most small teams obsess over the first and barely look at the second, even though Play Console measures it for free.
What Play Console measures
Google defines the key store listing numbers like this:
- Store listing visitors: “the number of users that visited your Store Listing who didn’t already have your app installed on any of their devices.” Repeat daily visits from the same source count once.
- Store listing acquisitions: users who visited your listing and installed your app, and didn’t have it installed on another device at the time.
- Click-through rate: “the percentage of store listing visitors who clicked on a button (Install, Open, or Pre-register).” Google’s help page says this replaced the older conversion rate measure in July 2026.
Split it by traffic source
One blended number hides most of what’s going on. Play Console breaks visitors down by where they came from:
| Source | Who they are | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play search | People who searched and then opened your listing | Whether your listing convinces people who are actively looking. Most affected by your keywords and rankings. |
| Google Play explore | People who browsed Play (charts, recommendations) and then opened your listing | Whether your listing works for people who weren’t looking for you. |
| Ads and referrals | People who came from an ad or an external link | Whether your listing matches the promise of your ad or website. |
Use peer benchmarks
Play Console can compare your daily click-through rate with your peers’ median, 25th and 75th percentiles. Benchmarks only show when there’s enough peer data, and they’re limited to breakdowns like country, language and traffic source. If you’re below the median in a country that matters, that country’s listing (screenshots, short description, localisation) is your first job.
What moves conversion most
- Your first two or three screenshots. Most visitors never scroll further. Show the result the user gets, with a short caption.
- Your short description. It’s the most-read text on the listing. Say what the app does and for whom, in 80 characters.
- Your rating. It appears in search results and on the listing. A drop from 4.5 to 4.1 stars can cost installs from every keyword. See our guide to how the rating is calculated.
- Localisation. A translated short description and localised screenshots in your biggest non-English markets.
- Your icon. Mostly affects whether people tap you in search results, before they reach the listing at all.
Test changes with store listing experiments rather than swapping assets and hoping. Experiments split traffic between versions and tell you which converts better.
Why conversion and rankings go together
Installs from search are roughly your visibility in search multiplied by how well your listing converts. Improve either and installs rise. Improve both and the effect compounds. Practitioners also widely believe Google Play uses how searchers respond to your listing as a ranking signal, so a listing that converts better can, over time, help you rank better too.
“We rank #4 for our main keyword but installs are flat. Let’s add more keywords.”
“We rank #4 but our search CTR in India is below the peer 25th percentile. Let’s test new first screenshots there before chasing more keywords.”
+What is a good store listing conversion rate on Google Play?
It depends heavily on category, country and traffic source. Instead of a generic number, use Play Console’s peer benchmarks, which compare you to similar apps in the same breakdown.
+Why is my conversion rate from explore lower than from search?
Explore visitors weren’t looking for an app like yours, so fewer of them install. That’s normal. Compare each source with its own benchmark.
+Do screenshots affect keyword rankings?
Not directly, since Google doesn’t read them for keywords. But they affect how many people install, which practitioners believe can influence rankings over time.
