How to get ChatGPT and Gemini to recommend your Android app

People now ask AI assistants “what’s the best app for…?” before they open the Play Store, and Gemini can send them straight to a Google Play listing. How AI picks which apps to name, what it reads, and a 7-step plan to get your app into the answer.

In this article +

Key takeaways

  1. 01AI assistants don’t rank apps like a store does. They name the apps most consistently linked to the user’s need across the web, so the goal is to be mentioned often for the right use case, not to be #1.
  2. 02Gemini on Android can now recommend Google Play apps inside the chat and send people to your listing to install, through the Google Play connected app.
  3. 03What AI reads: your store listing text, your website, reviews, community discussions such as Reddit, and comparison articles. Hidden keyword fields and visuals do little or nothing.
  4. 04Write one clear sentence about who your app is for and what it does, and use it everywhere: title area, short description, first line of your description, and your website.
  5. 05Test it: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your users ask, once a month, and record whether you are named.

“What’s the best app to track my expenses without ads?” A growing share of people now type that into an AI assistant instead of the Play Store search bar. Pew Research found that 44% of U.S. adults used ChatGPT in early 2026, and 61% of 18–29 year-olds. Those answers increasingly decide which apps people install.

Can Gemini really send people to my Play listing?

Yes. Google’s Google Play connected app for Gemini lets people “discover, find, and install apps” from a chat in the Gemini app on Android. Someone describes what they need, Gemini suggests apps, and a tap opens the app’s Google Play page to install. Google says availability “may vary by country, device, or developer”, and users must be 18 or older and signed in with a personal Google Account.

Inside the Play Store itself, Google is adding AI too: Ask Play answers questions about an app on its listing, and AI-generated lists now top some longer searches. We covered those changes in our post on why your #1 ranking might now be on screen four.

How do ChatGPT and Gemini decide which apps to recommend?

They don’t keep a ranked list of apps. AppTweak describes the process as intent-first: the model works out what the person is trying to do, draws on many sources, and names the apps that are consistently associated with that use case. Popularity helps, but it is not the deciding factor, and AppTweak notes that store rank and AI visibility often don’t match.

Your websiteYesSay the same thing as your listing, with a clear features and FAQ page.
User reviewsYesAsk happy users for reviews that mention what they use the app for.

The 7-step plan

1. Write your one-sentence answer

Finish this sentence: “[App] is a [type of app] for [who] that [main result], [key detail].” For example: “Budget Nest is an expense tracker for students that works offline, with no ads and no account.” Each detail is something a person might ask an AI for.

Example — Short description
Before

“The #1 best money app!!! Budget, finance, expenses, savings, tracker, planner”

After

“Track expenses offline. No ads, no account, made for students.”

Why it works. The good version contains facts an AI can repeat accurately (offline, no ads, for students), and still includes the words people search for.

2. Use the same sentence everywhere

Put it in your short description, the first line of your long description, your website’s homepage and its page title. AppTweak warns that conflicting descriptions weaken the link between your app and its use case. Consistency is the signal.

3. Answer the questions people actually ask

List the 10 to 20 questions your users would ask an AI: “best offline expense tracker”, “budget app without ads”, “expense tracker for students in India”. Answer them on your website in a simple FAQ, one question per heading, with a direct first sentence. This is the format AI assistants quote most easily.

4. Get reviews that say what the app is for

A review that says “Great app!” helps your rating. A review that says “Finally an expense tracker that works offline on the train” also tells AI what your app is good for. After a user completes something meaningful in your app, ask for a review using Google’s in-app review prompt.

5. Be helpful where your users talk

Reddit threads, Discord servers and forums are among the sources AI assistants draw on. Answer questions properly, disclose that you’re the developer, and mention your app only when it genuinely fits. One honest, upvoted answer can outlast a hundred promotional posts.

6. Get into comparison articles

“Best apps for…” articles are a common source for AI answers. Find the ones that rank for your category, and send the author a short, factual note: what your app does differently, pricing, and a link. Don’t pay for fake reviews; it breaks Google Play policy and erodes trust.

7. Test every month, and track your store rankings alongside

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity your 10 to 20 questions once a month. Record whether you are named, which competitors are, and how you are described. AI answers vary from one try to the next, so look at the share of questions that name you, not a single answer.

Question to ask AIWhat it tells you
“What’s the best app for [need]?”Whether you’re seen as a leading option at all
“Best [need] app without ads / offline / free?”Whether your key differentiator is known
“[Your app] vs [competitor]?”How you are described and compared
“Is [your app] good for [audience]?”Whether your target audience is linked to you
A simple monthly AI visibility check.
Do
  • +Describe your app in plain, specific facts.
  • +Keep your website and Play listing saying the same thing.
  • +Ask for reviews after a moment of success in the app.
  • +Join conversations to help first.
  • +Check AI answers monthly and keep a record.
Don’t
  • −Stuff keywords into your listing: it breaks Google Play policy and reads badly to AI.
  • −Claim “#1” or “best” without proof.
  • −Post promotional spam on Reddit.
  • −Buy reviews or fake comparison articles.
  • −Judge your AI visibility from one answer on one day.

Do Play Store rankings still matter?

Yes. Most installs still come from people searching the Play Store, and short keywords like “budget app” are still decided by store ranking. AI answers are an extra channel, not a replacement. The good news: the same clear, specific listing text helps you in both.

Questions
How do I get my app recommended by ChatGPT?+

Describe your app in one clear sentence (who it’s for and what it does) and use it on your Play listing and website, earn reviews and community mentions that describe your use case, get included in accurate comparison articles, and test monthly which questions name your app.

Can Gemini install apps from Google Play?+

Gemini can recommend apps from Google Play in a chat on Android and open the app’s Google Play page so the person can install it, through the Google Play connected app. Google says availability varies by country, device and developer.

What does AI read about my app?+

Mainly your store listing text, your website, user reviews, community discussions such as Reddit, and comparison or “best apps” articles. Hidden keyword fields, screenshots and your icon have little or no direct effect on AI answers.

Is AI app discovery replacing Play Store search?+

Not yet. Most Android installs still come from Play Store search, so keyword rankings still matter. AI assistants are a growing extra channel, and clear, specific listing text helps in both.

How often should I check whether AI recommends my app?+

Monthly is enough for most apps. Ask the same 10 to 20 questions each time in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and track the share of questions that name you, because individual answers vary.
