Google Play reviews: how to get more, reply well and fix "reviews not showing"

More honest reviews is the fastest way to lift a rating. How to ask the policy-safe way, reply templates for negative reviews, and why some reviews don’t appear.

Key takeaways

  • Ask every user, at a success moment, with Google’s In-App Review API — never ask "do you like the app?" first.
  • Incentivised or gated reviews break Google Play policy.
  • Reply to 1–3★ reviews quickly, specifically, and come back when the fix ships.
  • New reviews can take time to appear, and Google filters spam — patience before panic.

How to get more reviews (the allowed way)

  1. Use the In-App Review API so users can rate without leaving your app.
  2. Trigger it after a success moment — finished a task, hit a streak, third session — never on first launch or after an error.
  3. Don’t ask a question first ("Enjoying the app?") and don’t put the API behind a button: Play limits how often the dialog appears.
  4. Share your review link in your community, newsletter and support replies — to everyone, not just happy users.
  5. Never offer rewards for reviews or ask for 5 stars specifically.

How to reply to negative reviews

Replies are public and visible to every visitor. Keep them under 350 characters, specific, and never defensive.

Sorry the timer stopped after the update — that’s on us. Version 3.2.1 fixes it and is rolling out now. Thanks for flagging it!
  • Acknowledge the exact problem they described.
  • Say what you did or will do, with a version or date if you can.
  • Offer a support email for account-specific issues.
  • After the fix ships, reply again — many users update their rating.

Why reviews are "not showing"

  • New reviews can take some time to appear publicly.
  • Google filters reviews it considers spam, off-topic or policy-violating.
  • Reviews are shown per country and language by default — check the right storefront.

Turn reviews into a roadmap

Group your latest reviews into complaints, praise and feature requests. Fix the most common complaint first — it is almost always the fastest rating win.
