How long does ASO take to work on Google Play? A realistic timeline

You changed your title on Monday. When should rankings move, and when can you judge the result? A week-by-week timeline for Google Play metadata changes, what causes the delay, and how to measure fairly.

AASODrift team · Indie Android developers

Key takeaways

  • Expect early movement within days of a listing update going live, but don’t judge the result in the first week.
  • Practitioners commonly see rankings settle over two to four weeks; many recommend waiting six to eight weeks on Android before the next text change.
  • Changing several fields at once makes it impossible to know what worked. Change one thing, measure, then iterate.
  • Daily rank data is the only way to separate the effect of your change from normal day-to-day movement.

It’s the question every developer asks after hitting “Send for review” on a new title: how long until I know if it worked? Google doesn’t publish an answer. What we have instead is a lot of practitioner experience, and it points to a fairly consistent pattern.

The typical timeline after a text change

WhenWhat usually happensWhat to do
Review (hours to a few days)Your update waits for approval. Nothing changes in search yet.Record today’s positions for every keyword and country.
Days 1–7 after going liveThe new text is picked up. Newly added keywords may appear somewhere in the top 100; existing positions often wobble.Watch, don’t react. Early movement is noisy.
Weeks 2–4Positions drift toward where they will settle, as Google sees how searchers respond to your new listing.Compare weekly averages, not single days.
Weeks 4–8Rankings are mostly stable, moving a few places day to day.Judge the change. Plan the next one.
A common pattern for Google Play text changes. Individual results vary.

Why it isn’t instant

Re-indexing your text is only the first part. Google Play ranks apps on relevance and on how people behave: whether searchers who see your app tap it and install it, and whether those users stick around. Those behavioural signals take time to collect after any change, which is why practitioners widely believe conversion and engagement per keyword keep moving rankings for weeks after the text itself is indexed.

That’s also why AppTweak and Apptamin both advise against changing metadata too often on Android. If you change your title again before the first change has settled, you reset the clock and can’t tell which change did what.

How long for different kinds of change

  • Title and short description: the strongest text signals. Expect visible movement within the first one to two weeks, settling over a month or so.
  • Long description: a weaker signal. Changes tend to be smaller and slower to show.
  • Icon, screenshots and video: don’t affect relevance directly, but can change how many searchers tap and install, which can move rankings gradually. Test these with store listing experiments first.
  • A big new feature or a burst of installs (press, a feature, ads): can move rankings within days, then fade as the burst ends.

How to measure an ASO change fairly

  1. Change one field at a time where you can. If you must change title and short description together, accept that you’re testing them as a pair.
  2. Write down your baseline: position for every keyword in every country you care about, the day before the update goes live.
  3. Mark the go-live date on your rank charts so you can see before and after at a glance.
  4. Compare averages over 7 days before and 7–14 days after, not single days.
  5. Check competitors. If a competitor changed their title the same week, your movement may have nothing to do with you.
  6. Wait four weeks before calling it, and six to eight before the next big text change.
Example · Reading the result
Before

“We changed the title on the 3rd and dropped from #9 to #14 on the 5th. Revert it!”

After

“Our 7-day average for ‘sleep sounds’ was #11 before the change and #7 for weeks 3–4 after. Our new keyword ‘brown noise’ went from unranked to #24.”

Why it works: Single-day drops in the first week are normal noise. Averages over settled periods show the real effect.

When to roll back

If a keyword that drives a large share of your installs falls well outside the top 10 and stays there for two to three weeks, and nothing else explains it (a competitor change, a bad release, a crash spike), roll that field back. Otherwise give it time. A lot of good ASO changes look bad for the first week.

+How quickly does Google Play index a new title?

Google doesn’t say. In practice, developers often see new keywords appear within days of an update going live, with positions continuing to move for several weeks.

+How often should I update my Google Play metadata?

Many practitioners suggest waiting six to eight weeks between text changes on Android, so each change has time to settle and you can measure it.

+Why did my ranking drop right after I improved my listing?

Early movement after an update is noisy. Wait two to three weeks and compare averages before deciding, and check whether a competitor changed their listing at the same time.
